So, there we were...

I was burning a largeish chunk of cow and Kara suggested we start a blog.  So I did!;)
A little bit of background and our intent first. We don't really have a farm, tiny or otherwise.  But... one day we will! For now we are growing veggies and some fruit in raised beds and containers.  Lets not forget the front yard bed of potatoes, garlic and onions.

So far we may have done a poor job of maintaining a good list of exactly which variety of what plant we have in the ground but we do have a lot of enthusiasm and so far are having good luck growing stuff.

The purpose of the blog isn't just to follow our efforts in the garden but to share some of our day to day efforts working towards our ultimate goal which we like to call the five year plan. It's kind of a homesteading/off the grid kinda thing.  We would both like to live somewhere less populated, slower paced, with more outdoors opportunities. A place where we can revel in the beauty that is our natural world with out the intrusion of the Jones' across the street. Somewhere we can garden or on a very small scale farm if you will. Somewhere we can dabble with new and interesting things like solar/wind power, aquaponics. And Kara wants tiny animals, mini pigs, donkeys, goats and such.

All of it is new for us, this is our first year trying a garden, I'll cover some of our reloading and shooting adventures which are also newish.  The reloading for me and the shooting for Kara. We'll include some of our wildlife sightings and pictures if we can make it happen.  Maybe even some of our motorcycle rides, trip report style.  Hopefully we'll be able to include some successful hunting and fishing trips.

I'm going to close with a list of the various plants we've got in the ground already.
Radishes, our second batch
Romaine lettuce
Cabbage
Cucumbers
Green beans
Peas
Jalapenos
Onions
Carrots
Corn
Potatoes
Zucchini
Straight neck squash
Garlic
Strawberries
Basil
Bell peppers, Green and Red
Tomatoes

  3. good luck with all that, research first then plant, or raise, little critters can be real escape artists, goats are goats large or small. Do alot of research on the solar wind power, while it has promise it really doesn't always pan out. I would like to talk to your neighbors about how much its saving them. I seriously question the self supporting solar/wind generation.
I had friends @ Ft Carson buy cabins in the mountains, just to find there is NO water, have to bring it in. When I bought my casa, there was nothing behind me, pasture land, kinda like yours is now, till there is a house back there. then your .22 practice comes to a halt. I could show you some places you might get fairly cheap (?) where I grew up in Nebraska. We weren't off the grid, we didn't even know there was a grid. I would help if you spoke Polish and Danish, look on google earth @ Daneverkie Nebraska. anything west of there. And you need a snow shovel ALOT. eastern Oklahoma is sparsely populated, pasture land. Not as bad snow. I'm staying here for now, but the move to po dunk LA is not out of the question.

  4. Hi Dave. This is "Chuck Shankroast" from Facebook. Karen's husband. Good luck with everything! I wish you the best of luck being self sufficient. If you're new to reloading check out http://www.ammosmith.com/ very friendly and knowledgeable people there. Of course there are multitudes of sites and you probably have ones that you like. This is just the one I'm comfortable on.
