We've found some really great places to camp, for now we're generally trying to stick to campgrounds, they're pretty deserted this time of year. Maybe next month we'll devise a suitable camping potty but we're running low on space to pack things in the trucks.
On the truck note the Suburban has been great except we had to replace the injectors this past weekend. The F150 has been great as well but the lack of 4x4 has hampered us. Kara has had to pull me out twice now, once out of snow and the second time last night when I tried to turn around on a grassy slope. We really need 4wd! The other two issues are the regular cab and short bed. The lack of an extended cab is not a huge issue but it means if we go some where we either have to take the burb or both trucks because of the dogs. Once we get a place that will hopefully be less of an issue. The bed length is hampering us a bit though. Hopefully in the coming months it'll sort itself out! On the list of things we need to change or add we need a better solution than a solar shower and have looked at propane camp showers, next month one will be a priority! The other issue is our cute little ryobi chain saw, it's been great but... It's nowhere near enough saw for up here, next week I'll look at used saws and see about getting a grown up saw.
We've looked at a few places and a couple we really like, we're in a holding pattern of sorts until the 10th of May as the woman that owns our top prospect is out of town until then. In the meantime we're going to keep looking, we're currently outside of Harvard, Idaho and will move shortly as we just stopped here for the night after running into snow trying to cross from Idaho hwy 6 to hwy 3 on forest road 447 and 381, we camped on sand creek near triplet creek.

I think since you're mainly on dirt you might go for a set of snow chains for the Ford. Later on perhaps a diff locker. If it were JUST a dirt truck you could install Lincoln Lockers XD Chains would probably do ya pretty good so long as it isn't rocky. Better find yourself a snowplow! Even the cheapest pieces of shit work so long as you don't mind constantly fixing broken shit.

I am sure Eric already commented on this with much more insight than I have on these matters. I will say, as far as showers go, biodegradable soap and a creek work pretty well. Good luck in the land hunt!
ReplyDeleteThe creek is WAY too cold!!
