It was already well on it's way to scorching hot here and BOOM a ton of rain last week, and more again yesterday. A total of close to 5 inches according to our rain gauge. While it's definitely much needed we also got high winds and hail which we could have done without. Our damage has been minor although we were very worried about the garden, the damage was extensive but the plants seem to have rebounded just fine from it. our corn is starting to form ears, peas are growing in their pods and little cabbages are forming.
We've been having a problem with our maters, seems like every day a ripe mater will have a gaping hole in it's side, turns out mockingbirds like to eat them for the water they contain so we'll have to build something to prevent that. We've got a ton of potatoes sprouting which is exciting, I sure do love me some taters!;) We've got our first flowers blooming on the first potatoes we planted so we should be harvesting them semi soon I think, as soon as the flowers fall off.
There's been some problems with our choice of materials for the roof of the chicken coop, we chose a semi transparent green corrugated plastic and it has turned out to not be ideal for us. During both storms the winds have been high enough to rip pieces of it off the coop so I've decided to replace it as soon as we can with tin, the framing of the roof is also something I'm not in love with so I may beef that up at the same time.
We haven't been able to make any progress with the fence due to the weather, but there's another 128 feet ready to go up, that should allow us to finish it next month. We also got our leach field repaired and have decided to remove some of the soil around the vent area and replace it with a nice gravel area which will include the bird feeder and a bird bath.
